Frequently asked questions

Q. Do I have to be able to swim to go canyoning?
A. No, you can join us on the half day Queenstown trip. Please let us know before you leave. Yes, you do need to be able to swim for the full day Routeburn experience.

Q. Are the jumps optional?
A. Yes, if you really don't want to do any of the elements once you are in the canyon we can provide alternative options.

Q. Can I wear my glasses?
A. We don't recommend you wear glasses in the canyon. Contact lenses are better but can still fall out. If you only have glasses, ensure you have a sports strap or tie and let your guide know before departure. Once again remember we can't guarantee the safety of your glasses so if you can do without them then do.

Q. How do the guides know what size equipment to pack?
A. Due to the location of the canyon for the full day Routeburn Canyon you must send us your height and weight to help the guides pack the right size equipment for you. We do not require your sizes for the half day Queenstown Canyon as the canyon is located approximatly 20 minutes from town so we can pack a gigantic trailer loaded with gear for all shapes and sizes. If you are bringing children that meet our minimum age requirment, please get in touch as we always want to confirm our equipment will fit.

Q. What do I need to bring with me on a canyoning trip?
A. All you need to do is wear your swimwear, bring a towel and a sense of adventure! We work in publicly accessible places so we recommend you do not bring any valuables with you on your trips. We can however advise secure storage in Queenstown if needed.

Q. What shoes should I wear?
A. We provide wetsuit socks (if relevant) and wetsuit booties.

Q. Can I bring my camera?
A. By all means bring your camera for pictures before and after your trip however, for safety reasons we strictly request that you DO NOT bring your camera into the canyon with you. A trained canyon photographer will be in attendance on your experience. We endeavour to have a photographer on every trip however, this is not guaranteed due to conditions and staffing levels therefore photos are not included in the trip price.

Q. Will I get wet?
A. Yes! However, you will be wearing a wetsuit, bouyancy aid and wetsuit booties. Canyoning is a perfect rainy day activity as you're going to get wet anyway!

Q. Do I need to book a Canyoning experience in advance?
A. Space can be limited, particularly in peak season so we highly recommend booking in advance.

Q. What is your cancellation policy?
A. We require 24 hours notice of your cancellation in order to receive a full refund. No refund is due within 24 hours of your trip departing.

Q. Can I go Canyoning between May to September?
A. No, due to water and air temperatures in the South Island during this time we close our operation. Canyoning.co.nz operate trips between October and April.

Q. What is the maximum number of people on a trip?
A. This is dependent on the number of guides/ photo guides available on the day but we generally work to a 1 - 6 guide - guest ratio.

Q. Can my friends/ family watch while I go Canyoning?
A. No, our canyons are quite hidden from public view and as you are continually moving along the canyon there is not an appropriate place for a spectator to watch safely. The equipment provided allows our customers to access and enjoy otherwise forbidden territory.
